A sewer cleanout is the access point that makes camera inspection and jetting possible.
The cleanout is a capped pipe fitting — typically 3″ or 4″ diameter — connected to your sewer line and installed specifically to provide direct access without going through a fixture drain or removing a toilet. It is the foundation of any drain service: without accessible cleanout access, inspection and jetting are more complicated and sometimes impossible.
Where cleanouts are located
Near the foundation on the exterior of the house — the most common location. In the yard, along the path from the house toward the street. In the basement or utility room, where the main drain exits the building. In the garage. Some older homes have cleanouts in the yard that have been covered by landscaping, soil, or concrete over the years.
Not all homes have cleanouts — particularly older homes. If your home was built before the 1970s and you have never seen a cleanout, it may not have one, or the existing one may be buried.
What a cleanout looks like
Residential cleanouts are typically white or black PVC pipe (newer) or cast iron with a brass plug (older), extending a few inches above grade with a removable threaded or snap-on cap. They are usually 3″ or 4″ in diameter — large enough to insert a camera cable or jetting hose.
Why not having a cleanout matters
Without a cleanout, we access the line through a toilet flange (removing and resetting the toilet) or through a floor drain. These options work but add time, cost, and complexity. For a property that has never had drain service or is going to need maintenance on any regular schedule, a plumber-installed cleanout is a worthwhile one-time investment.
