A pipe offset is a misalignment at a pipe joint where two sections no longer line up correctly.
Pipes are connected at joints — either cemented (for PVC), gasketed (for larger clay or concrete pipe), or mechanically coupled. Over time, ground movement, soil settling, root pressure, or improper installation can cause the pipe sections to shift so the ends no longer align. This creates a step or ledge inside the pipe.
Pipe offsets matter because: waste and paper products catch on the ledge and accumulate, causing recurring clogs. Severe offsets can block flow almost completely. And they are visible on camera — a camera inspection will show exactly how much offset is present.
Mild offsets (a few millimeters) can often be managed with regular jetting. Significant offsets — where the mismatch is large enough to cause consistent blockage — typically need pipe repair or replacement at that joint.
