A sewer cleanout is a capped pipe fitting that gives direct access to your sewer line.
It’s typically a 3″ or 4″ diameter pipe with a threaded cap, located near your home’s foundation or somewhere in the yard along the path of the sewer line. Opening the cap exposes the inside of the sewer line without having to go through a fixture drain or the toilet.
Cleanouts are important for drain jetting and camera inspection because they provide the most direct, least restricted access to the line. Accessing through a drain opening or toilet works in some cases, but a cleanout gives us a straight shot in with both the camera and the jetter.
Not every home has a cleanout — especially older homes. If you do not have one, it is worth having a plumber install one. It makes every future drain service faster, cleaner, and less invasive.
