Signs of a broken sewer line: inside the house and outside in the yard.
A broken sewer line — a collapsed section, significant crack, or joint failure that allows waste to escape — progresses from warning signs to obvious symptoms over time. Catching it at the warning sign stage is far cheaper than dealing with it after the consequences set in.
Warning signs inside the house
Multiple slow drains — when multiple fixtures throughout the house drain slowly simultaneously, that points to the main line. A single slow fixture is usually localized. Multiple fixtures affected at once signal a main line restriction or blockage.
Gurgling from drains and toilets — gurgling when other fixtures are used indicates air displacement from a shared line restriction. Toilets that gurgle when the washing machine drains, or when the toilet in another bathroom flushes, are a main line signal.
Sewage smell in the house — persistent sewage odor, particularly in lower floors, basement, or near floor drains, can indicate a cracked pipe allowing sewer gas into the building.
Sewage backing up through lower drains — sewage or dirty water coming up through floor drains, basement drains, or lower-floor showers is a main line blockage emergency. Stop using water immediately.
Warning signs outside the house
Unusually lush, green grass patch in the yard — a spot of grass that is greener and grows faster than surrounding areas, above the path of the sewer line, may be feeding on sewage leaking from the pipe.
Soft, wet, or sunken spots — ground above a leaking or collapsed sewer line can become saturated or collapse as soil washes away.
Sewage smell in the yard — particularly in dry weather when gas would not otherwise be dispersed.
What to do
A camera inspection identifies the problem and its location without excavation. This is the necessary first step — knowing exactly what is broken, where it is, and how severe it is determines the repair approach and cost. We can schedule same-day camera inspections across Metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
