Sewer line replacement vs. repair: how to decide when a camera inspection finds a structural problem.
Not every structural problem in a sewer line requires full replacement — and not every problem can be solved with spot repair. Making the right call requires understanding what was found on camera, where the problem is, how extensive the damage is, and what the rest of the line looks like.
When spot repair makes sense
A localized problem — a single offset joint, a short collapsed section, or a specific crack in an otherwise sound line — can often be addressed with spot repair rather than full replacement. A plumber excavates at the problem location, repairs or replaces that section, and backfills.
Spot repair is appropriate when: the rest of the line is in good condition (confirmed on camera), the problem is clearly localized, and the pipe material in the surrounding sections has sufficient remaining life.
When full replacement makes sense
Multiple problems distributed along the line — several offset joints, numerous cracks, deterioration throughout — point to a pipe that is failing systemically, not at one spot. Repairing one section leaves the other problems to cause failures later. In this case, full lateral replacement is more cost-effective than a series of spot repairs.
Pipe materials at end of life — particularly Orangeburg, or heavily corroded cast iron, or clay tile with multiple joint failures — typically warrant full replacement rather than repair because the surrounding material is not sound enough to repair into.
Trenchless options
Full pipe replacement does not always require extensive excavation. Pipe bursting (pulling a new pipe through the old one while the head fractures the old pipe outward) can replace a deteriorated lateral with minimal excavation — typically only at the entry and exit points.
Pipe relining is another trenchless option — but see our position in the pipe relining page. We are not proponents of relining as a general solution, and it is not appropriate for severely deteriorated pipe.
