Pipe scale: what it is, where it forms, and how to remove it.
Pipe scale is a hard mineral deposit — primarily calcium carbonate — that forms on the interior walls of pipes when dissolved minerals in the water precipitate out and adhere to the surface. It is distinct from grease buildup (which is soft and organic) and root intrusion (which is biological). Scale is hard, white to grey in color, and requires different treatment than soft organic blockages.
Where scale forms
Scale forms wherever water with high mineral content flows and sits. In drain lines, the most common locations are: horizontal runs where water has more contact time with the pipe wall, areas of turbulent flow where minerals precipitate more readily, and sections where partial blockages cause pooling.
In Metro Atlanta, water hardness varies by municipality. Some water sources in the region — particularly groundwater-sourced systems in areas like Cherokee and Hall counties — deliver harder water than surface-water-sourced systems. If you are on well water, hardness levels are determined by your local geology.
What scale looks like on camera
Scale appears as a rough, white or cream-colored coating on the pipe wall. Light scale may look like a thin rough texture; heavy scale narrows the visible pipe diameter significantly and has a bumpy, irregular surface. The camera shows both the extent of the deposit and how much it has narrowed the pipe interior.
How scale is removed
Light to moderate scale responds to hydro jetting — the rotating nozzle abrades the deposits and the water pressure flushes them out. Heavy scale that has built up significantly and hardened may require descaling — mechanical chain knockers or cutting heads that physically break up the deposits — followed by jetting to flush the loosened material.
Preventing scale buildup
Water softeners or conditioning systems reduce the mineral content of the water before it enters your plumbing, slowing scale accumulation. Periodic maintenance jetting removes scale before it becomes a significant restriction.
