Hydro jetting pressure: what PSI is used and why it varies by pipe and blockage.
Hydro jetting equipment operates across a range of pressures — from 1,500 PSI for light residential cleaning to 4,000+ PSI for heavy commercial and industrial applications. The right pressure for a specific job is determined by the pipe material, the pipe diameter, and the type of blockage — not just cranked to maximum.
Pressure ranges by application
Light residential drain cleaning (bathroom lines, light kitchen buildup) — 1,500–2,500 PSI. Sufficient for soap scum, hair accumulation, and light grease buildup.
Standard residential sewer jetting (main line blockages, grease, moderate root intrusion) — 2,500–3,500 PSI. The most common residential pressure range.
Heavy residential or commercial (severe grease, dense root intrusion, large-diameter commercial lines) — 3,500–4,000+ PSI. Requires heavier equipment and greater flow volume.
Why pressure alone does not determine effectiveness
Flow rate (gallons per minute) matters as much as pressure. High pressure with low volume can penetrate a blockage but may not carry enough water to flush debris out of a large-diameter pipe. The right combination of pressure and flow rate for the pipe size and blockage type is what makes jetting effective.
How the camera inspection determines pressure selection
The camera inspection shows us the pipe material (which determines safe pressure limits) and the blockage type (which determines the pressure needed to clear it). Cast iron and clay tile pipes require lower maximum pressure than PVC. Heavy root intrusion requires higher pressure than soft grease buildup. The camera inspection is what allows us to select the appropriate settings before the jetter runs.
Is higher pressure always better?
No — and this is important. Higher pressure applied to a deteriorated pipe can cause damage. A clay tile pipe with already-cracked walls, or cast iron with significant internal corrosion, can fail under pressure that would be safe for a sound PVC line. Matching the pressure to what the pipe can safely handle is part of professional practice.
