How to unclog a main sewer line: what works and what makes things worse.
A main sewer line clog is not a plunger situation. The main line runs underground, typically 60–150 feet from the house to the city sewer main, and a blockage there requires professional equipment to clear. Here is what works and what does not.
What does not work (and what makes things worse)
Chemical drain cleaners — not effective for main line blockages. Chemical cleaners can damage pipe materials and do not address the root cause. They can also react with existing waste in the line, creating hazardous fumes.
A standard plunger — designed for localized fixture clogs, not main line blockages. A plunger cannot access the main line and cannot address buildup along its length.
Continuing to run water — if the main line is blocked, every flush and drain cycle is adding more to a system that cannot move it forward. Stop water use and call for service.
What works
Camera inspection — before anything else, know what you are dealing with. A blockage and a collapse look identical from outside the pipe. The camera tells you which one you have.
Hydro jetting — the appropriate tool for main line blockages caused by buildup, root intrusion, or debris. High-pressure water clears the full diameter of the pipe, not just punches through the thickest spot. The main line needs to be accessed through the cleanout.
Drain snaking — appropriate for simple main line clogs without significant buildup. A plumber’s snake can clear a straightforward blockage. For grease buildup, root intrusion, or recurring clogs, jetting is more effective.
Finding your cleanout
The cleanout gives direct access to the main line without going through a fixture. Look near the foundation on the exterior of the house, in the yard along the path from house to street, or in the basement or utility room. If you cannot find it, we can help locate it.
