Look for a white or black capped pipe near your foundation or in your yard.
The sewer cleanout is typically a 3″ or 4″ diameter capped pipe (ABS or PVC, usually white or black) extending a few inches above grade. Common locations: near the foundation of your house (often on the side facing the street or alley), in the yard along the path from your house to the street, or inside — in a utility room, basement, or crawl space.
Older homes may have a cast iron cleanout with a brass or iron cap, flush to the ground or slightly above it. These can be harder to find, especially if they’ve been covered by landscaping or soil over the years.
If you cannot locate it, your city or county may have records of its location. A plumber can also locate it using a sewer locator. When we do a camera inspection, the camera itself can help us determine where the cleanout is relative to the line.
