How long a sewer line lasts depends on the pipe material — and Georgia conditions accelerate some timelines.
The lifespan estimates below assume reasonable conditions and maintenance. Georgia’s combination of clay soil, seasonal ground movement, high rainfall, and abundant tree root pressure means actual lifespans are often shorter than these generalized numbers. A camera inspection gives you the actual current condition rather than an estimate based on age alone.
Pipe material lifespans
PVC and ABS (1980s to present) — 50–100 years under normal conditions. Smooth walls, corrosion-resistant, good joint integrity with proper installation. The most durable common pipe material in residential use.
Cast iron (pre-1980s) — 50–75 years, highly variable. Cast iron corrodes from hydrogen sulfide internally, and the rate depends on the sewer gas exposure, soil conditions, and water chemistry. Some cast iron pipes installed 70 years ago are still functionally sound; others installed 40 years ago show significant deterioration. Camera inspection is the only way to know.
Clay tile (pre-1960s) — 50–60 years nominally, but functioning clay tile pipes 70–80 years old are not unusual in Atlanta neighborhoods. Clay does not corrode chemically but is vulnerable to joint failure and root intrusion. The gasketed joints used in older clay tile are the most common root entry point.
Orangeburg (1940s–1972) — 50 years was the design life; most Orangeburg at this age is failing or has already failed. This is a paper-based material that deforms and collapses as it absorbs moisture over time. Any Orangeburg that is still in the ground is past its lifespan and should be replaced.
What affects actual lifespan
Soil conditions: acidic soil accelerates metal corrosion. Clay soil that swells and contracts seasonally stresses pipe joints. Root pressure: trees with aggressive root systems near the pipe shorten effective life of clay tile and older cast iron. Maintenance history: pipes that have been jetted periodically to remove scale and root intrusion accumulate damage more slowly than unmaintained lines.
