Flooding — whether from heavy rain, storm surge, or a localized yard flood — can introduce sand, silt, debris, and organic material into drain lines, particularly sewer laterals. Understanding the impact and when to call for camera inspection and jetting helps you respond appropriately after a flood event.
How flooding affects sewer lines
Sediment infiltration — if your sewer line has small cracks, loose joints, or failed sections, floodwater under pressure around the pipe exterior can push fine sand and silt into the pipe interior. This sediment accumulates in low spots, at offsets, and at the bottom of the line, gradually restricting flow.
Debris entry through cleanouts — if floodwater reached your cleanout access points and the caps were not sealed, surface debris can enter the line directly.
Sewer surcharge — during significant storms, city sewer mains can exceed capacity, causing sewage to back up into private laterals and, in some cases, into homes through the lowest fixtures. This is a different problem from sediment infiltration but can leave sewage in the lower sections of the lateral.
Signs to watch for after a flood
Slow drains that were not slow before the flood. Gurgling from drains or toilets. Sewage smell that was not present before. Recurring backups that started after the flood event.
What camera inspection shows after flooding
The camera will show sediment accumulation, any debris that entered the line, and whether the flood event revealed pre-existing structural issues (cracks or joint failures that allowed infiltration are visible on camera). It also shows whether the pipe interior is otherwise clean and sound.
