Commercial vs. residential drain jetting: what is different and what stays the same.
The core process of camera inspection and hydro jetting is the same in commercial and residential settings. The scale, complexity, frequency requirements, and stakes are different.
What is different in commercial jetting
Equipment — commercial drain lines are larger in diameter (4″–8″ versus 3″–4″ residential) and longer. Effectively cleaning a large-diameter commercial line requires more water volume (higher gallons per minute) in addition to appropriate pressure. Commercial jetting equipment is heavier-duty than residential.
Blockage severity — commercial kitchens, apartment buildings, and high-use commercial properties produce buildup at rates that dwarf residential properties. A commercial kitchen line that has not been jetted in six months may have grease accumulation that a residential kitchen would not accumulate in ten years.
Frequency — residential drain jetting is typically a maintenance service every 1–5 years. Commercial properties need jetting on a schedule — quarterly for high-volume food service, annually for general commercial.
Consequences of failure — a blocked drain in a residence is disruptive. A blocked drain in a restaurant during service, a hospital, or a multi-tenant building has operational, health code, and liability implications that are categorically different.
What is the same
Camera inspection before jetting — always. Footage provided after every inspection — always. Honest diagnosis of what is found and what it means — always. Quote before starting work — always. The standards Sunburst Environmental applies to every job do not change based on property type.
