Yes — and it is one of the most common causes of sewer line failure in Georgia.
Tree roots naturally seek water, and even a tiny crack or loose joint in a sewer pipe emits moisture that roots detect and grow toward. Once a root finds its way in — even through a hairline crack — it expands inside the pipe over time. Root systems can exert significant pressure on pipe walls, eventually cracking the pipe from the inside or causing it to collapse around the intrusion.
In North Georgia, common culprits include sweetgums, water oaks, willows, and some maples — all fast-growing species with aggressive root systems. Even roots from smaller ornamental trees and shrubs can enter sewer lines given enough time.
Clay tile pipes (pre-1960s homes) are the most vulnerable because joints are gasketed rather than cemented. Cast iron and concrete joints are also vulnerable. Modern PVC with properly cemented joints is more resistant, but not immune to root pressure or joint separation over time.
The good news: root intrusion caught early — before the pipe wall is cracked through — can be cleared with hydro jetting. The bad news: root intrusion that is gone undetected long enough to crack or collapse the pipe requires pipe repair, not jetting.
