Properly done after a camera inspection, drain jetting does not damage pipes in good condition.
The concern is reasonable — high-pressure water sounds aggressive. But the answer depends on two variables: the condition of the pipe and whether a camera inspection was done first. The camera inspection is specifically designed to identify pipes that should not be jetted.
Pipes that handle jetting safely
Modern PVC and ABS (1980s to present): excellent. Smooth walls, corrosion-resistant, handles standard residential jetting pressure well. Cast iron in good condition (pre-1970s): safe with appropriate pressure settings. The camera inspection confirms the condition. Clay tile in good condition: can be jetted at lower pressure settings. Concrete pipe: handles jetting well.
Pipes that require caution or should not be jetted
Cast iron with significant internal corrosion: thinned pipe walls may not handle jetting pressure safely. We assess on camera and make the call. Severely deteriorated clay tile: clay that is already cracked or has significant joint failure is at risk. Orangeburg pipe (1940s–1970s): a paper-based material that deteriorates with age. We do not jet Orangeburg that is showing significant deterioration — it needs to be replaced, not cleaned.
Pipes that appear fine but fail during jetting
This is rare but happens. A pipe may have external damage, a failure point hidden behind scale, or a section near collapse that is not visible from inside. If a pipe fails during jetting that the camera showed to be in adequate condition, the failure was a pre-existing structural weakness — not caused by jetting. If we jette a pipe that the camera clearly showed was compromised, that is a different matter. The camera inspection protects both parties.
The practical answer
In years of camera inspecting pipes before jetting, the situations where we decide not to jet because the camera shows the pipe cannot handle it are relatively common. The situations where jetting causes unexpected pipe damage are rare. The camera inspection makes the difference.
